The 2025 International Youth Innovation Camp in Ocean Science and Technology, Hainan, initiated by the Southampton Ocean Engineering Joint Institute at HEU and co-organized by the Sanya Yazhou Bay Science and Technology City Administration and the Nanhai Institute of HEU, was held in Yazhou Bay, Sanya City, Hainan, China from March 30 to April 5.

This camp was driven by project-based learning, promoting academic discussion and exchange between student project groups, and incubating international research outcomes of university students. The activity focused on fields such as acoustic engineering, energy, control engineering, and maritime research. Through free academic exchange, it broadened the horizons and thinking of domestic and international students, jointly proposing valuable thoughts and solutions for technological progress in the marine field.

DAY 5

2025 International Youth Innovation Camp in Ocean Science and Technology, Hainan

Closing Ceremony

On the morning of April 4, members of the Camp came to the Innovative Research and Education Valley of Sanya Yazhou Bay Science and Technology City. In their respective group discussion classrooms, they conducted final discussions on project content and finalized their proposals. Work in each group was proceeding intensively, either continuing to revise and improve the content of closing reports and presentation slides, or integrating the work results of members with different responsibilities within the group. The team members' ideas collided vigorously, creating an atmosphere that was both tense and lively.

At 11 a.m., Professor Duan Wenyang, Dean of the Joint Institute, gave a lecture to all campers in classroom S0502 of the IREV South Building, focusing on competence maps and AI empowerment, and introduced the curriculum system of the Joint Institute. Professor Duan engaged in in-depth discussions with students on topics such as interdisciplinary innovation capability development in the era of artificial intelligence. The campers listened attentively, creating a vibrant academic atmosphere.

After lunch, the campers first went to the auditorium on the first floor of the IREV South Building for a brief rehearsal of the closing ceremony, then returned to their respective classrooms to finalize their reports and presentations. They also allocated which parts different team members would present, ensuring that each member would have the opportunity to show themselves on stage.

At 6 p.m., the closing ceremony of the 2025 International Youth Innovation Camp in Ocean Science and Technology, Hainan was held as scheduled in the auditorium on the first floor of the IREV South Building.

The ceremony was hosted by Professor Liu Songzuo, Vice Dean of the Joint Institute. First, Liu expressed heartfelt thanks to all the teachers and staff who organized this camp, and paid high respect to every student who participated seriously throughout the camp. He also looked forward to the excellent presentation of each group's project results.

Next, Associate Vice-President of the University of Southampton and Executive Dean of the Joint Institute, Anna Barney, delivered a speech. She warmly congratulated the successful organization of this camp, highly praised the Chinese and British students for their full exchange and learning during the days of working and living together, and establishing deep friendships. She expressed hope that students from both sides would continue to maintain communication and achieve win-win cooperation on the path of science.

Afterward, Professor Duan Wenyang, Dean of the Joint Institute, gave a speech. He once again affirmed the contributions of all teachers and students participating in this camp, emphasized the important role of marine technology innovation in promoting human social progress, and expressed his best wishes and expectations for all participants to be trained and inspired by the camp and achieve greater success in their future academic and career paths.

Next, the four groups of the camp took turns on stage to report and showcase their discussion results from the past few days, the technical background and future development direction of their projects, as well as the cultural exchange achievements unique to each group. These presentations fully demonstrated the excellent results of cultural integration, mutual learning, and collaborative efforts to advance projects during the students' days together.

After all group presentations, Prof. Liu Songzuo summarized and praised the final results of the four projects. Given the outstanding performance of all campers, certificates were awarded to all teaching assistants and campers to thank them for their contributions to the discussions and activity organization over these days.

After the closing ceremony, all participants shared an exquisite cold buffet in the auditorium, then gathered together to enjoy a lively and enthusiastic closing party.

Amid enthusiastic applause, the closing party began. Students from Yazhou Science and Technology City—Sun Yunya, Huang Yujie, Ren Yaling, and Li Wenxin—ignited the venue with their energetic group dance Supernatural; Cao Shuling presented a solo dance Spirit that perfectly combined softness and strength, showing the versatility of Science and Technology City students. The Chinese tongue twister Lion-Eating Poet in the Stone Den (Shi-shi Shi-shi Shi) performed by Sheng Yuxuan, Pranav, and Hannah was witty and amusing, drawing continuous laughter from the audience and becoming a highlight of the party. Each group also performed well-known songs such as I Gotta Feeling, Timber, and Country Road, filling the entire venue with a joyful atmosphere.

As the party drew to a close, all campers joined hands to form a circle, singing Friends and We Are the World with deep emotion, expressing their beautiful vision for friendship and world peace. Finally, See You Again brought the evening to a warm conclusion, with everyone promising to meet again next year, bringing the camp to a perfect end. The entire party was filled with youthful passion and international friendship, demonstrating the creativity and cohesion of the students.
