Thirty years ago, I came to Harbin Engineering University to study and stayed on as a teacher, witnessing the exchanges and cooperation between HEU and the University of Southampton in the marine field. Twenty years ago, I went to the University of Southampton as a visiting researcher of the Royal Society and was deeply involved in the teaching and research system of the UoS. During this period, I saw a large number of Chinese students come here for further study and gradually grew into excellent engineers and top professionals. Since then, I have been thinking about how to cultivate outstanding students in universities. Five years ago, we signed a cooperative education agreement with the University of Southampton. Under the faith of introducing advanced education models, world-class teachers, and enriching educational resources, we carried out a lot of demonstration work on cooperative education with each other. On May 18, 2020, the JEI was officially unveiled thanks to the dedication of several generations of HEUers.
Facing the new round of scientific and technological revolution and industrial transformation, HEU, fully combines the characteristic HEU disciplines of "the three seas and one nuclear” and the key disciplines of the University of Southampton, and has made consensus on cultivating comprehensive, outstanding, and innovative talents with both international vision and patriotic enthusiasm and an all-round development of moral, intellectual, physical, aesthetic and industrious qualities.
Pursuing the spiritual context of Ha Jun Gong and learning from the education and teaching models of top international universities, the JEI has formed the educational philosophy of "to educate is to foster virtue, and to teach is to learn", and implemented it in all works of school-running through the "full-staff virtue education" system.
The JEI is an international platform full of surprises and challenges. We welcome ambitious, capable and responsible students to join us. We hope that everyone can realize their dreams and pursuits here.
In the future development, with the support of the teaching and research of world-class disciplines in shipbuilding and marine engineering, the JEI will continue to carry out discipline construction and innovation reforms, standardize systems and management, and join hands with aspirational people at home and abroad to work persistently for enhancing our core competitiveness, back-feeding our country, and taking the lead internationally.
