International Integration in Deep Blue | Teachers and Students Gather to Explore New Models of Industry-Education Integration [Day 2]

2024 Hainan Yazhou Bay International College Students Science and Technology Camp Kicks Off!

On the morning of April 1st at 9:00 AM, the 2024 Hainan Yazhou Bay International College Students Science and Technology Camp officially began at Classroom S502 in the Innovation Learning Valley of Sanya Yazhou Bay Science and Technology City. The opening ceremony and the Face-to-Face with Experts academic frontier report were attended by Wang Bo, Director of the Sanya Yazhou Bay Science and Technology City Administration; Professor Anna Barney, Associate Vice-President of the University of Southampton; Professor Xiong Qian, Deputy Dean of the Southampton Ocean Engineering Joint Institute at Harbin Engineering University; Professors Xiong Yeping and Zhang Jihui from the University of Southampton; Associate Professor Ma Xuan from Harbin Engineering University; Mr. Li Lei from China University of Petroleum (East China); and 57 teachers and students from Harbin Engineering University, the University of Southampton, and Newcastle University.

Professor Xiong Qian extended a warm welcome to the teachers and students from the University of Southampton, Newcastle University, Harbin Engineering University, and other institutions, expressing his excitement for the students' performances over the next five days.

In her remarks, Professor Anna Barney shared her anticipation for the students' contributions during the

camp. Wang Bo, Head of Talent Training at the Education Cooperation Promotion Department of Sanya Yazhou Bay Science and Technology City Administration, highlighted the significant support for the event and the importance of fostering international exchanges and cooperation to advance the marine industry.

Student representative Yuan Yumeng from the Southampton Ocean Engineering Joint Institute at Harbin Engineering University introduced the three project groups of the science camp and extended best wishes to all participants. The opening ceremony concluded successfully.

During the Face-to-Face with Experts session, Professor Anna Barney discussed the application of acoustics in human health, while Mr. Li Lei explained the practical uses and importance of underwater acoustic technology for whale-like sonar information collection and processing.

Professors Yeping Xiong, Xiong Qian, and Ma Xuan elaborated on the trends and challenges of green ships, focusing on energy conservation and emission reduction, through detailed charts and data analysis.

Ms. Zhang Jihui presented various examples of acoustic applications in everyday life.

Following the morning activities, teachers and students gathered for a group photo.

At 2:00 PM in Classroom S502 of the Innovation Learning Valley of Sanya Yazhou Bay Science and Technology City, Professor Zeng Qingyun from the Nanhai Institute introduced the development history and current status of Harbin Engineering University and the Nanhai Institute to the campers.

Students then created and showcased their creative team flags. During a visit to the Hainan Provincial Engineering Research Center for Intelligent Collaborative Integration of the Entire Cruise Ship Chain, participants experienced a realistic simulation of the Adora Magic City, China's first large domestically-built cruise ship, appreciating the dedication and rigorous scientific spirit of its researchers.

Campers also toured the Industry Promotion Center of Yazhou Bay Science and Technology City and the Deep Sea Technology Public Platform at Hainan Province's Deep Sea Technology Innovation Center. They learned about the industrial layout of Yazhou Bay Science and Technology City, its focus on the marine industry, and the development of deep-sea technology, observing advanced experimental equipment in related fields.

In the evening, teachers and students enjoyed various outdoor activities on Yazhou Bay Beach, fostering closer relationships between Chinese and international students in a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere.
