Assignment Review Meeting for Curriculum Construction Project (first batch) and Teaching Seminar for the 2020/21 Spring Semester

 

Mar. 7 2021, Southampton Ocean Engineering Joint Institute held a assignment review meeting for curriculum construction project and teaching seminar for the 2020/21 spring semester. The leadership team of the JEI, along with Sun Rongping, Deputy Dean of the Undergraduate School, Zhang Haigang, head of the Underwater Acoustic Engineering programme, Li Hongliang, teaching supervisor of the JEI, Li Hong, head of the Mechanics, Structure and Materials courses, Tan Sichao, head of the Thermal Fluid courses, Zhang Xiaowei, head of the Mathematics courses, Jiang Haili, head of the Physics courses, and Zhu Dianyong, head of the foreign language courses attended the meeting, which was hosted by Lu Xiqun, Deputy Dean for Teaching Affairs of the JEI.

 


Zhang Xiaowei, head of Mathematics courses, Jiang Haili, head of Physics courses, and Yu Shougang, member of the English course team, reported on the content of the curriculum construction assignment and the progress of the course materials construction. The expert group inquired about the ideas, plans, and assessment indicators, and put forward comments and suggestions for revision.

 


The requirements from Dean Duan Wenyang and the review experts are: we shall 1) adapt to the educational objectives, refine the top-level design of curriculum construction, and continue to optimize the teaching content, links and methods; 2) continue to deepen the connection with the University of Southampton and combine the UoS’s advanced teaching philosophy and curriculum system with the characteristics of HEU’s ship and ocean fields, and enhance the core competitiveness of the JEI’s curriculum quality; 3) reflect on the problems that occurred in the education and teaching process of the last semester, and implement process quality control and assessment plans that focus on ability assessing; 4) pay attention to the ideological and political construction of courses in view of the characteristics of the JEI, foster virtue through education, stimulate students' interest in learning, and guide students to develop good independent learning methods and habits; 5) strengthen the interdisciplinary integration, and continue with the adapting work of the teams of English, mathematics, physics courses to major courses so as to form a comprehensively collaborated teaching research team; 6) attach importance to refinement and accumulation so as to form experience and teaching mode that can be replicated and promoted.


Through this meeting, the JEI and the teaching teams achieved better consistency on the ideas and objectives of curriculum construction, and strengthened the communication between the teaching teams of general education and the related major courses, and it will further facilitate the curriculum construction so as to enable continuous enhancement of the quality of teaching and the level of the faculty.
